WHAT'S NEW IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY? Did you know that seniors aged 50 and over comprise 47% of the leisure travel market? According to an article by Stanley Turkel featured on Hotelinteractive.com, seniors, or the more favored term, the 'Mature Market,' consume 144 million roomnights per year. The Mature Market controls 77% of the nation's financial holdings worth about $800 billion and are America's fastest growing age group. The mature market is willing to travel in the off-seasons if there is enough incentive. Furthermore, they can travel midweek and arrange their travel plans in accordance with rooms availability. Many pay in full on departure by personal check, which reduces credit card commissions, and many are willing to give large deposits, providing a cash-flow benefit. In general, they also eat more meals at the hotel than other guests.

TECHNOLOGY FACTOID... A survey conducted on business travel in the September issue of Consulting Magazine, polled a group of Management Consultants and asked about their travel habits. These consultants typically logged 101,000 to 500,000 miles per year and 40% take 8 to 20 or more airplane trips per month. Fifty-three percent of the respondents indicated that the availability of in-room high speed Internet access service is the most important service they seek in choosing a hotel. Also, among the top amenities were the availability of a reliable morning wake-up call (46%), a front desk with no waiting to check in and out (38%), a fitness center (34%), and a newspaper delivered to the room on a daily basis (32%).
